Thanks to the wonderful 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, I learned a little more about the very concrete risks for our all privacy.
A new paradigm
Privacy and Security in digital environments have a new final boss. With quantum computing on the rise, asymmetric cryptographic schemes are doomed, within the next four to ten years.
“No problemo” you might say. Security is always a cat & mouse and security will also have its pace to counter risks. But there is a paradigm that might changes everything: Harvest now, decrypt later. 💥
If sensitive encrypted data has been harvested already only to be waiting for quantum cryptographic code breaking this very data, in the near future, short term updates to secure IT systems do not help anymore. Cat & mouse does not apply, when the cat sees the future.
As a designer my work is all about making informed decisions, to build the best human-computer interactions. Knowing about this threat landscape, I am thinking not only about my work, but also about my own and my family’s privacy.
